A fourth-place finish was one of the highlights for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' track and field team at the state track meet last weekend, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Rain drenched athletes, officials and fans alike at different times during the three-day event. That was certainly the case during the events in which the Hawks competed on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Noah Adams placed fourth in the Class 1A long jump competition. The senior's best attempt in the rain measured 20'11.25". He had entered the meet as the No. 1 seed.

Kole Becker, of Lisbon, won the 1A long jump title with a leap of 22'4".

The Hawks also placed in two relay finals. The 4x200 squad of Adams, sophomore Ryan Borden, senior Dawson Schiphoff and junior Connor Dodd placed 13th overall. Their official time was 1:33.05.

H-M-S's sprint medley relay team of Adams, sophomore Travis Kamradt, Schiphoff and Borden placed 24th with a time of 1:41.52.

Dodd also competed in the preliminaries of two sprint events. He placed 13th overall in the 100 meter dash prelims with a time of :11.58 and finished 23rd in the 200 meter dash prelims with a time of :24.00.

Adams, Borden, Schiphoff and Dodd came in third in their heat of the 4x100 relay prelims. Their time of :45.03 ranked 10th overall.

Kooper Ebel, who qualified to compete in the 400 meter dash and as a member of the sprint medley relay squad, did not participate due to an injury.

The state meet wraps up the season for the H-M-S boys, who as a team finished third in the Hawk Relays, fourth in two meets including the state qualifying meet, and fifth in three others.

Seniors completing their high school track and field careers are Adams, Gabe Bronstad, JP Mutombo and Schiphoff.
