Head coach Ashley Tessum strategizes with her team during the Hawks' final game of the season.

The turning of the calendar from 2023 to 2024 led to a strong finish for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team.

H-M-S finished the pre-holiday portion of the schedule with a 4-5 record. But following the break, the Hawks won six straight games and nine of their final 13 to post the program's best record in seven years.

The Hawks also climbed up the War Eagle Conference standings, finishing fifth at 6-4.

"Going from a 3-19 season record last year to 13-9 this year, I couldn't be more proud of these girls and the teamwork and dedication they displayed this season," Hawk coach Ashley Tessum said.

Improvement was also evident in several statistical areas. The Hawks scored 1,045 points (47.5 ppg) during the season, which were 151 more than they did a year earlier. Opponents scored 1,109 points. In 10 of their wins the Hawks allowed 50 or fewer points; in eight of their losses they gave up 58 or more.

The program should be in a position to enjoy future success, as there were no seniors on the roster.

"I'm very thankful to get the opportunity to have all of these girls back again next season," Tessum said.
