Alan Sands will perform his comedic magic routine at the Hartley Community Center's annual fundraiser on Saturday, April 6.

Guests at the Hartley Community Center's annual VIP Supper are in for tricks, treats and plenty of laughs on Saturday night.

This year's entertainment will feature Alan Sands, who will bring his comedic magic act to the City With a Heart. Sands, who is also a renowned hypnotist, will put on a show following supper at 7:30 p.m.

"I saw a comedy magical show one time and thought it would be a really fun thing to bring here," said community center Director Jessika Storm. "We try to avoid repeating and duplicating what other fundraisers do, and to my knowledge, we've never had this in the area."

As always, funds raised at the VIP Supper will benefit ongoing maintenance and upgrades at the community center. Storm said the to-do list features one rather large item.

"We're going to have to replace the roof in the near future," she said. "We recently learned the issue is more pressing than we previously thought, and it's a huge priority now."

Leaks have been discovered and a recent inspection revealed some soft spots.

"We don't really know all the exact details and price estimates right now, we just know that it needs to be fixed," Storm said.

Storm and the board of directors have other targets on the horizon like a new sound system, kitchen updates and other aesthetic improvements. She was hired in January and has several goals for the facility to increase usage, and she hoped to see a big crowd on Saturday night.

"The more the merry – come on out and support us," she said. "Once the magic show is over, the bar will be open for as long as people want to stick around and hang out."

Sands will work the crowd before and after the show with a strolling magic act. Cocktail hour kicks off at 5:30 p.m., with dinner by Red's Catering served at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the VIP Supper are available at Treimer's Insurance, by calling (712) 728-2045, or by contacting Storm or any board member.
