David J. Moermond, 67, Urbandale

David James Moermond, 67, of Urbandale, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Unity Point - Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

He was born in Primghar on May 11, 1956, to Jacob and Ruth (Kohn) Moermond. He graduated from Sutherland High School in Sutherland. Right after graduation he started working construction. On one hot summer day when he was digging in a pit where it was 120 degrees, he realized that the guy outside the pit, where it was only 100 degrees, had a college degree. That sent him to Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo where he earned an A.S. in engineering technology. Immediately upon graduating, he went to work for the Polk County Engineer's Office. After seven years there, he went on to earn a B.S. and an M.S. in Civil Engineering at Iowa State University and an M.P.A. at Drake University. He was Project Manager and Vice President at HR Green Engineering until his retirement in 2019.

Dave met his wife, Mary, in 1981, and they traveled the world together. He loved to travel! Their third date was a road trip (in his MGB convertible) to see the Iowa Hawkeyes play in the 1982 Rose Bowl. He and Mary visited 43 countries during their marriage. His favorites were Egypt and Israel. They just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in August with friends and family.

Dave liked working with his hands and was always willing to help out, making repairs around the church, building decks for his siblings, cleaning up the neighborhood after the derecho, gathering tons of iron in Iowa fields when his brother's cattle barn blew apart in a tornado, or helping his brothers with the planting and harvesting on their farms.

Dave was a member of Walnut Hills United Methodist Church in Urbandale. He was on the property committee there and always came home from meetings beaming, saying, "Gosh, we have a good team!" He was also a member of the Alliance Française of Central Iowa and was its treasurer for over a decade. After retirement he enjoyed taking OLLI classes at Drake. His 1979 maroon MGB convertible was his pride and joy. Mary often said he loved it just a little less than he loved her. For several years Dave was a member of the Iowa British Car Club, taking day and weekend trips around Iowa along the scenic routes.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law and his brother-in-law.

He is survived by Mary, his wife of 40 years; his brother, Dan (Val) Moermond, of Hartley; his sister, Cyndi (Bob) Stewart, of Altoona; his brother, Josh (Becca) Moermond, of Sutherland; his sister-in-law, Sue (Dino) Vlahos, of Sleepy Hollow, Ill.; his nephews: Nick (Alyssa) Stewart and Nate (Lindsey) Stewart, of Bondurant, and Jacob (Jessica) Moermond, of Spencer; his niece, Stephanie (Clint) Hoermann, of Royal; his nephews, Case (Kirstin) Moermond, Dain Moermond and Gabe Moermond, of Sutherland; and his nieces, Olivia (Alex) Vlahos, of Nantucket, Mass., and Taylor (Samuel) Desmond, of Crystal River, Fla. He had eight grand-nieces and nephews, with one on the way in August.

A celebration of Dave's life will be held on his birthday, Saturday, May 11, at Walnut Hills United Methodist Church, 12321 Hickman Road in Urbandale, at 11 a.m. Pastor Nate Nims will officiate. There will be a visitation from 9-11 a.m. before the celebration. A luncheon will follow.
