5th graders receive First Communion at BLC Bethlehem Lutheran Church's fifth graders partook in their First Communion last Thursday during the Maundy Thursday service. The Milestone Ministry Team gifted the girls their very own keepsake chalice that they used for their first communion by intinction. The girls were honored and blessed to receive the bread and wine, which represents the body and blood of Christ.

Named to Dean's List at Palmer

Cole Verbrugge, of Sanborn, has been named to the 2023 fall trimester Dean's List at Palmer College of Chiropractic's Main Campus in Davenport. He is the son of Charity and Cory Verbrugge and a 2016 graduate of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School.

Palmer College of Chiropractic, the first and largest college in the chiropractic profession, has campuses in Davenport, San Jose, Calif. and Port Orange, Fla.

Local facilities receive paint grants

Diamond Vogel and Keep Iowa Beautiful last week announced the 2024 grant recipients for the Paint Iowa Beautiful program. The longstanding partnership provides free paint to a wide variety of public service and community betterment projects throughout Iowa.

Local recipients included: Hap Ketelsen Community Center, Everly, for the large reception area, meeting room and kitchen; and Paullina American Legion, Paullina, for east and south side outside area.

In its 20-year partnership with Keep Iowa Beautiful, Diamond Vogel has awarded enough paint to cover over five million square feet of surfaces for 1,438 different community projects across the Hawkeye State.

NWI fishing report

Colder weather conditions have decreased lake temperatures significantly. This has allowed some areas to ice over during the night. Most courtesy docks are not in place. The walleye season is closed on the Iowa Great Lakes until May 4.

East Okoboji Lake: The lake is three inches below crest.

Bluegill, fair. Yellow perch, fair. Sorting will most likely be needed.

Silver Lake (Dickinson): Walleye, fair.

Spirit Lake: Lake access through Templar Lagoon ramp is blocked; the channel silted in during the last large wind event. The lake is currently 13 inches below crest.

Black crappie, fair. Anglers are finding fish of quality size. Bluegill, fair. Yellow perch, fair. Sorting may be needed.
