Early week post-season results for H-M-S

3 H-M-S bowlers advance to state individual tourney

Three Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn bowlers have qualified to compete in the 2024 Iowa High School Bowling Championships.

Jack Mastbergen, Eli Mastbergen and Caleb Aaron finished first, second and third in the individual tournament held on Tuesday at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn. The Top 4 individuals from the eight district sites advance to state.

The trio from H-M-S will compete in the Class 1A state individual tournament at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Cadillac XBC in Waterloo is the host site.

The Hawks placed third in the district team competition with a pin count of 2802. Charles City won the automatic berth to the state team tournament with 2919 pins. Forest City finished second with 2864.

Charles City also won the team title at the girls' state qualifying meet, held Monday at Locomotion Lanes. H-M-S was the runner-up with 1938 total pins, and Heather Elgersma finished eighth in the individual competition with a 431 series.

H-M-S girls' season ends

Manson Northwest Webster came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, 46-44, in the Class 2A Region 5 quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Hawks led by seven with five minutes remaining but were held to two points down the stretch.

H-M-S ends its season with a record of 13-9. Manson Northwest Webster (12-11) advances to play Sioux Central in the regional semifinals on Friday.
