Pioneers wrestle at Spencer tournament

Okoboji/H-M-S wrestlers competed in the Austin Roberts Memorial Tournament at Spencer on Dec. 19. Nine Pioneers placed in their respective weight classes.
Nick Bronstad was the highest place finisher among wrestlers from H-M-S. The 285-pounder lost by fall (4:51) to Javier Mendez of Spencer; won by fall (1:49) over Sean Zimmerman of Sergeant Bluff-Luton; lost a decision (6-3) to Lyle Moore of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock; and won the fifth-place match by fall (2:29) over Brandon Vander Sluis of LeMars.
Jonathan Ortiz finished eighth at 138 pounds. He lost by fall (1:52) to Matt Peters of Lawton-Bronson; won a decision (11-5) over Grant Paca of Sibley-Ocheyedan; and lost by fall (0:40) to Grant Russell of West Monona.
Also finishing eighth was Bryce Dodge at 145 pounds. He lost by fall (3:35) to Alex Allen of LeMars and to Graham Eben of CL/GLR (1:40). Dodge then lost a decision (11-5) to Jace Fullhart of Spencer.
Chayton Faulkner did not place at 170 pounds. He lost by fall (2:00) to Jacob Van Der Brink of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley; by fall (3:17) to Emmit Fleshman of West Lyon; and by fall (5:39) to Ryan Sadoski of LeMars.
Other Pioneers who placed were Dylan Jones (120) and Noah Strantz (152), fourth; Bryce Sehman (113) and Caleb Jones (126), seventh; and Sam Pas (220), eighth.
Team scores were CL/GLR 220, Sergeant Bluff-Luton 207.5, LeMars 177.5, Spencer 169, West Lyon 140, Sioux Center 120, BH/RV 96.5, West Monona 91, Estherville-Lincoln Central 80.5, Sibley-Ocheyedan 74, Lawton-Bronston 57 and Okoboji/H-M-S 49.
