Big scores end with opposite outcomes

H-M-S girls top Wolves, lose to Hinton

All five starters for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team scored in double figures during a 67-17 win over Harris-Lake Park on Jan. 5 in Hartley.

Lydia Harders scored 20 points to lead the offense while Darby Mastbergen scored 12, Jasmine Lux scored 11 and Olivia Grooters and Taya Mason each scored 10. Emily Otto added four points.

The Hawks made 30-of-74 shots from the floor and 7-of-10 attempts at the foul line.

H-M-S scored the first six points and maintained that advantage throughout the first quarter. A 15-0 run to begin the second quarter put H-M-S firmly in control of the game. They led 36-12 at half time and extended it to 59-15 at the end of the third quarter.

The Wolves scored nine points in the first quarter but only scored eight the rest of the game. They made just 7-of-25 shots from the floor and 3-of-13 free throws.

H-LP also committed 30 turnovers, several of which were converted into easy baskets by the Hawks who finished with 24 steals. Lux had six steals, Grooters had five and Harders and Mastbergen each had three.

H-M-S out-rebounded the Wolves by a 30-17 margin, led by Harders and Lux with six rebounds, Grooters with five, Otto with four and Emily Mutombo with three.

H-LP (0-9) was led in scoring by Payton Reimers with nine points.

• vs. Hinton

A big first half settled the outcome of Hinton's 80-35 win over H-M-S on Jan. 8 at Hinton.

The Blackhawks outscored H-M-S by a 51-20 margin in the first half and extended their advantage to 42 points by the end of the third quarter.

Leading scorers for H-M-S were Harders, Lux and Mastbergen with eight points each. Elise Haack, Grooters and Mason each scored three points and Otto added two. The Hawks made 13-of-34 field goal attempts and 8-of-13 shots at the free throw line.

H-M-S finished with just 12 rebounds, led by Grooters and Lux with four each and Mastbergen with three. Grooters added two assists and Lux had two steals.

The Hawks struggled to maintain possession of the ball as they committed 27 turnovers.

Leading scorers for Hinton (6-4) were Bella Bader with 26 points and Anna Coffee with 18.

The loss dropped H-M-S to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the War Eagle Conference. The girls will host state-ranked MMCRU (1A No. 5) on Jan. 15.
