Bowling teams get back in action with triangular sweep

A long layoff had some effect on Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's bowling teams during their first action of 2024, but both were still victorious during a triangular on Jan. 16 at Sanborn.

The Hawk girls finished with a 1,830 team total, topping West Sioux which finished with 1,695. Emmetsburg does not have a girls' team.

A highlight for H-M-S was Keyanna Brower bowling the girls' high game (145) and high two-game series (283).

Other individual scores for H-M-S were Jordan Lux 111-138, 249; Lexi Croatt 116-129, 245; Lillian Van Loon 120-113, 233; and Annika Overmire 102-119, 221. Scores of the Baker games were 90, 135, 129, 124 and 134.

Eli Mastbergen rolled a pair of 200 games (214-200, 414) to lead H-M-S. He was followed by Dawson Niichel 202-178, 380; Graham Lux 192-165, 357; Damian Dodge 176-181, 357; Jack Mastbergen 172-161, 333; and Caleb Aaron 161-154, 315. Baker game scores were 181, 178, 203, 168 and 186.

The Hawks won the triangular with a total pin score of 2,757. Emmetsburg finished with 2,428 and West Sioux had 2,315.

"Both teams were a little rusty with getting back from Christmas/New Year's break, but they pulled out the win with their determination," Hawk coach Julia Meyer said. "I am proud of all the bowlers and their efforts to get the wins."

She is hoping the weather will improve so the Hawks can prepare for the final meets of the season.

"With the snows and cold January weather, we are having a bit of a struggle getting in all our practices. But we are working hard when we do have them as we are nearing the final meets and regional/district play in just less than a month," she noted.

H-M-S will host Sioux Central on Jan. 26 at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn.
