H-M-S (6-15) advanced to the regional quarterfinal on Wednesday night at Remsen, where they faced Akron-Westfield. The Westerners swept Remsen St. Mary’s in the first round. The quarterfinal winner moves on to the semifinal on Oct. 26, which will be played at Gehlen Catholic High School in LeMars.

Cross country state qualifying meet at Holstein

Area high school cross country teams will compete in the Class 1A state qualifying meet at Holstein Country Club on Thursday, Oct. 22, starting at 4 p.m.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s runners will be competing, as will those from Alta-Aurelia, East Sac County, Gehlen Catholic, GT/RA, Harris-Lake Park, Hinton, Lawton-Bronson, Manson Northwest Webster, MMCRU, North Union, Ridge View, Siouxland Christian, South O’Brien, Fort Dodge St. Edmond, Remsen St. Mary’s, Trinity Christian and West Bend-Mallard.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union had earlier announced that as an additional precautionary measure due to COVID-19, there will be eight 1A qualifying sites instead of the traditional five. This will cut attendance at each location by around 10 teams per gender.

As a result, Class 1A will feature 16 state qualifying teams – the top two teams qualifying at each site instead of the usual three – and 10 individual state meet qualifiers for each gender instead of the usual 15. The IHSAA and IGHSAU anticipate this will be a one-time qualifying change.

The 1A and 2A state cross country meets will be held as originally scheduled, on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The 3A and 4A state meets will be held one day earlier in order to accommodate competition and crowds with COVID-19 precautions.
