Jessica Riedemann fully extends to catch a fly ball in left field. She then threw to third base to retire a Remsen St. Mary's runner.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's softball team saved one of its best performances for the final game of the regular season, but it was not enough to avoid a 6-5 loss to MMCRU on July 8 at Remsen.

The Royals scored all their runs during the first three innings, including four in the opening frame. They also scored once in the second and third innings.

H-M-S also scored in each of the first three innings, one run at a time. A two-run sixth inning pulled the Hawks to within 6-5, but they failed to score in the seventh.

"It was one of the best games of the season; a lot of fun to watch and to coach," said Hawk coach Carissa Post.

Offensively, Hannah Jochims was 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in; Elle Mastbergen was 2-for-3 with a double; and Bailey VerHelst and Cadence Klein were both 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Trey Haag was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs and five hits. She walked three and had one strikeout. In three scoreless innings Taya Mason gave up two hits, walked one and struck out three.

Post said the Hawks kept their errors to a minimum which helped them stay in the game.

Bailey VerHelst puts the ball in play against Remsen St. Mary's. The Hawks' first baseman had one hit in the game.

H-M-S got off to a promising start against Remsen St. Mary's, but that all changed in the later innings as the War Eagle Conference co-leaders rolled to a 19-1 win on July 6.

A two-run homer in the opening inning put St. Mary's on top. The Hawks' Brynn Webber answered with a solo homer in the second.

St. Mary's broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning. Several hits, walks, hit batters and H-M-S errors contributed to the scoring outburst. Another home run was the big hit in St. Mary's seven-run fifth inning.

Taya Mason pitched all five innings and gave up eight hits and six walks, hit four batters and struck out two. Only 12 of St. Mary's runs were earned.

Other hits for H-M-S were singles by Elle Mastbergen and Bailey VerHelst.

H-M-S concluded the regular season in ninth place in the conference with a 2-8 record.
