Pioneers crown 2 champions at wrestling invite

Bronstad, Strantz lead Okoboji/HMS to fourth-place finish

Nick Bronstad is about to pin Jess Christensen of E-LC on his way to the 285-pound title at the Okoboji/HMS Invitational.

Okoboji/HMS crowned two champions, had a runner-up finisher and added three third place finishes during the Pioneers' annual wrestling invitational on Dec. 4 at Milford.

First place finishers for Okoboji/HMS were Nick Bronstad at 285 pounds and Noah Strantz at 152. Dylan Jones finished second at 120 pounds.

Bronstad pinned all of his opponents, defeating Jess Christensen of Estherville-Lincoln Central in 36 seconds, Keegan McMillan of West Sioux in 1:34 and David Smith of West Hancock in the title match in 34 seconds.

Adding third-place finishes were Jesse Bockman at 170 pounds, James Gellerman at 182 and Sam Pas at 220.

Gellerman won his first match by fall over Kaleb Lufkin of North Union in 2:00. The freshman was pinned by Liam Cleary of Bishop Heelan in the semifinal round (3:54) but came back in the third-place match to defeat Evan Kruger of Central Lyon/GLR, 4-3.

Finishing fifth were Tyce Hanson (113#), Brennan Baschke (126#) and Nathaniel Franklyn (160#).

H-M-S wrestler Ethan Wiersma did not place at 195 pounds. He lost his quarterfinal round match to Juan Topete of West Sioux (1:00) and lost by fall in the consolation semifinals to Clayton Schroeder of GT/RA (3:58).

West Sioux won the team title with 215 points. West Hancock came in second with 172, followed by Central Lyon/GLR 165.5, Okoboji/HMS 154, Estherville-Lincoln Central and GT/RA 100, Bishop Heelan 82.5, Sioux Central 77.5, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 75.5, North Union 72, Fulda/MCC 63.5 and Sibley-Ocheyedan 41.
