Baseball team loses to RSM, drops three more games

Remsen St. Mary's hitters connected with the baseball early and often during an 18-1 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, on June 14 at Remsen.
The No. 4 team in Class 1A pounded out 18 hits, including eight doubles.
"We ran into a buzz saw," said Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden. "They are a very good hitting team."
St. Mary's scored eight runs in the first inning and then sent 15 hitters to the plate during a nine-run second inning. They scored their final run in the third.
H-M-S's only hit was a double by Samuel Heyn in the second inning. He scored on an error.
Jordan Ortega was the losing pitcher, giving up 15 hits and 15 runs. Dawson Schiphoff allowed three hits and two runs, and Jacob Cates walked two and struck out two.
• vs. Emmetsburg
The final margin was much closer, but H-M-S could not score enough runs to prevent a 6-2 non-conference loss at Emmetsburg on June 15.
Jacob Cates led off the second inning with a single and scored the game's first run on a single by Keaton Graves. Graves drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in H-M-S's run in the third inning.
Emmetsburg answered with a run in the second inning and took a 3-2 lead in third. The E-Hawks added three runs in the fourth inning to seal the victory.
"It was a tough loss," Gloden acknowledged. "We started out well but had one bad inning again and couldn't sustain it."
Offensively, Dawson Schiphoff hit a double and Samuel Heyn, Jordan Ortega, Graves and Cates each finished with a single.
Heyn pitched well in the loss. He allowed five hits and struck out five. Only one of Emmetsburg's runs was earned.
"Sam threw well enough to win again," Gloden said.
• vs. West Sioux
West Sioux doubled the score on H-M-S to earn a 10-5 win on June 18 in Hartley.

The Falcons' six-run third inning broke the game open. They had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the third as Trenton Vollink reached on an error and scored on a single by Dawson Schiphoff.
Two of H-M-S's runs in the seventh scored on a triple by Samuel Heyn. The final run scored on an error.
Heyn finished with two hits and three runs batted in. Keith DeBoer and Schiphoff had the other hits for H-M-S.
Jordan Ortega pitched six innings and allowed nine hits, walked three and struck out four. Ben Haack allowed a run and a hit in the final inning.
H-M-S (3-9, 1-6) hosts MMCRU on June 25 and George-Little Rock on June 29, and plays at South O'Brien on June 28 and at Trinity Christian on June 30.
