Charlie Conway tees off during H-M-S's meet with Gehlen Catholic on April 18. He shot a nine-hole score of 54.

The best team score of the season was not enough to give Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn its first War Eagle Conference boys' golf dual win at Sanborn.

The Hawks finished the meet on April 17 with a 203 team score. But with three players at the top of the leader board, the Falcons were able to record the winning total of 184.

Jack Mastbergen fired a 47 to finish fourth among the medalists. Other H-M-S scores were Charlie Conway 51, Lucas Kroese 52 and Blake Meendering 53. Ethan Baker played JV and recorded a 66.

Avery Millikan (44), Connor Bergsma and Brady Lynott (45) were the top medalists.

Gehlen Catholic dominated the meet on April 18 at Sanborn, with all six players finishing with better individual scores than H-M-S. As a result, the Hawks lost the meet, 180-210.

Blake Meendering shot back-to-back rounds of 53 during the Hawk boys' golf meets last week at Sanborn.

Individual results were Mastbergen 51, Kroese 52, Meendering 53, Conway 54 and Slayton McCarter 63.

Playing JV were Dominic Tripp 59, Aiden Bush 64 and Baker 67.

Hawk coach Mark Japenga feels there are areas on which the players can improve moving forward.

"We haven't played the best we are capable of to this point. We do a nice job of battling the adversity, but we need to get better at staying focused and making good decisions in managing the course," he said. "The kids work at their game and will get better. The weather has been difficult but we recognize it has been difficult for everyone."

The Hawks fell to 0-4 in dual play. They will host Unity Christian on April 27 and play at Sioux Central on April 28. The boys' conference tournament will be held May 1 at Sioux Center.
