Big inning costs H-M-S in regional loss to Generals

A seven-run second inning gave Sibley-Ocheyedan all the scoring it needed to hand Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn an 11-2 loss in a Class 2A regional softball quarterfinal game July 6 at Ocheyedan.
S-O had answered H-M-S's run in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Generals started things in the second inning with three straight hits, followed by an error, a walk and two hit batters that led to five runs. A pair of infield groundouts built S-O's advantage to 9-1.
The Hawks' initial run came when Gracie Knobloch and Bailey VerHelst hit back-to-back singles, with an error on the ball hit by VerHelst allowing Knobloch to score.

H-M-S scored again in the fourth when VerHelst doubled down the leftfield line and Eliza Tewes hit another double, scoring Morgan Grooters who was running for VerHelst.
The Generals added single runs in the third and fifth innings to wrap up the win.
"We struggled on the mound with both pitchers and our hitting," Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad observed. "Not playing for a week I feel did not help with the momentum we had going the previous week."
VerHelst and Tewes each had two hits and Knobloch added H-M-S's fifth hit.
Knobloch was the losing pitcher, allowing five hits and seven runs. She walked two and struck out two. Kamryn Ebel gave up five hits and four runs, and had two strikeouts.
H-M-S's season ended with a record of 10-15 while S-O improved to 15-9.
