Changes impact H-M-S's insurance costs

New buildings, worker's comp history force increase

August 19, 2021

Several changes over the past year have impacted the costs for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District's property and liability insurance coverage.

David Treimer and Liz Norgaard, of Treimer's Insurance Agency in Hartley, reviewed the impact of those changes during the board meeting on Aug. 16 in Sanborn.

The total premium for 2021-22 is $230,914.90. Treimer explained that comparisons to last year's costs are not realistic due to changes that occurred after coverage went into effect. He noted the new elementary building in Hartley was added after last year's package was accepted. The new middle school is already included this year.

The former elementary school in Hartley is now insured on a cash value of $700,000, with no property coverage.

Vehicle coverage for all school districts under the Employers Mutual plan has been changed to $1,000 deductibles for comprehensive coverage and collision. There is full coverage on glass for school vehicles.

"It was zero and $250 for comp and collision. Nobody has that anymore," Treimer said.

The worker's compensation history for the past three years is also driving up premium costs. Board Member Ryan Haack asked if the district could anticipate how the experience rating modification [mod] will impact budgeting in the future.

Norgaard said H-M-S addresses any issues that arise and is taking steps to avoid losses wherever possible.

The board approved the request by the high school football coaches to take the players to Sioux Falls, S.D., on Aug. 21 for a team bonding activity. Funds for the trip were raised this summer through a lift-a-thon. Coach Jay Eilers said the trip includes going to Crossfire Paintball and Pizza Ranch for a meal.

Resignations were accepted from Korey Ebel as assistant baseball coach and Maycin Gonnerman as an elementary associate. A contract was issued to Natasha Webster to fill the associate position.
