• Fatal accident occurs near Royal

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a serious UTV accident that occurred on Friday, June 18 at 10:39 p.m. The location was 1510 400th Street, near Royal.

The report stated that Aaron Wayne Nichols, 51, of Spencer, was driving a 2018 Honda UTV on private property when he is believed to have lost control, causing the UTV to overturn on its side. Nichols was transported by ambulance to the Spencer Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Royal First Responders and Spencer Ambulance assisted at the scene. According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation of the accident is ongoing.

• 5 adults, 2 juveniles charged in Everly burglary

Five adults and two juveniles were arrested on several charges stemming from a complaint of a burglary that occurred at the Everly school.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a burglary on Tuesday, June 8 at approximately 5:51 p.m. Upon investigation on June 14, a deputy determined that Riley Neuman, 19; Autumn Swancutt, 19; and Izayah Hooven, 19, all of Spencer, were allegedly involved in the burglary.

Neuman and Swancutt were arrested and charged with Burglary-3rd degree, a class D felony; Criminal Mischief-3rd, an aggravated misdemeanor; and Theft-4th, a serious misdemeanor. Hooven was arrested and charged with Burglary-3rd; Criminal Mischief-2nd, a class D felony; and Theft-4th. All three were held on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

The investigation continued on June 15, when Kala Biggar, 20, and Castle Biggar, 21, of Sioux City, were found to be allegedly involved in the incident. Both were arrested and charged with Trespassing, a serious misdemeanor. They were held in the Clay County jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond.

A 16-year-old female from Melvin was also found to be allegedly involved. She was taken into custody and cited into juvenile court for Burglary-3rd, Criminal Mischief-3rd and Theft-4th. She was released to the custody of her mother.

Alto taken into custody was a 17-year-old male from Spencer. He was cited into juvenile court for Burglary-3rd, Criminal Mischief-4th, and Theft-5th, a simple misdemeanor. He was released to the custody of a responsible adult.

• Arrested on drug charges

A search of a Paullina home resulted in the arrest of Joshua William Stanley, 39, of Paullina, on several drug-related charges.

The Paullina Police Department obtained permission from the owner to search a garage that Stanley used and normally kept locked. Authorities allege that prescription substances and drug paraphernalia were found in the garage, leading them to apply for a search warrant. The report stated that police found a plastic bag containing marijuana and several prescription pill bottles, some of which allegedly had labels indicating they had been prescribed to Joshua David Funk. Each bottle contained various prescription drugs.

Stanley was transported to the O’Brien County jail where he was charged with one felony count of Possession of a Controlled Substance-3rd Offense and six serious misdemeanor counts of Illegal Possession of Prescription Drugs. The report stated Stanley’s initial court appearance is set for June 29.

• Traffic stop leads to foot pursuit

A traffic stop on June 14 in Sheldon led to an altercation with an O’Brien County deputy and two men being arrested.

The report stated that the deputy stopped a vehicle at the intersection of West 7th Street and Western Avenue for a traffic violation. The driver, Kyran Lee Schuknecht, 19, of Sheldon, allegedly got into an altercation with the deputy and fled the scene of foot. After a brief pursuit, Schuknecht was taken into custody at Taser point.

Schuknecht was arrested on an outstanding warrant, and was also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Carrying a Weapon and Interference with Official Acts with Bodily Injury.

A passenger in the vehicle, Christopher Dale Engelkes, 19, of Sheldon, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age and Open Container.

Both men were taken to the O’Brien County jail.
