The little things are starting to pay off in a big way for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in War Eagle Conference boys' golf play.

H-M-S earned its second straight conference meet win by edging South O'Brien, 189-192, on April 22 at Primghar.

Two H-M-S golfers topped the medalist list. Ben Haack finished with the low round of the day (42) while Samuel Heyn was three strokes back at 45.

Other competitors were Wyatt Borden 50, Lucas Kroese 52, Keith DeBoer 54 and Spencer McCarter 58.

"The kids are making some really good strides, and are bringing their scores down and staying out of trouble," said Hawk coach Mark Japenga. "We didn't have near the penalty strokes as previous meets."

Josh Johannsen had the best round for the Wolverines (46).

Hawk JV players were Nick Bronstad 51, Jackson Albert and Tanner Tesch 58, and Charlie Conway 65.

• Split with H-LP, Trinity Christian

H-M-S earned a dual split during a triangular on April 26 at Sanborn. The Hawks' 174 team score was more than enough to defeat Trinity Christian (196), but Harris-Lake Park's 165 was too much to overcome.

Lucas Kroese watches intently as the ball rolls toward the flag during the golf meet at Primghar on April 22.

Samuel Heyn shot a great round of 38 for the best score of the day. Nick Bronstad and Ben Haack each shot a 44, which were good for second and third when matched against scores from Trinity Christian. Wyatt Borden shot a 48, and Lucas Kroese and Keith DeBoer each shot a 52.

"It is the best we have shot thus far; however, we all feel that we can shoot even better," Japenga said. "We are starting to improve our skill sets and really manage our individual games."

He noted that Haack showed great mental toughness after a very tough hole to play great golf the rest of the round, while Bronstad "shot super" in his first varsity meet. The rest of the team is "staying steady and playing solid golf, with great mental toughness and focus."

Leaders for H-LP were Lucas Gunderson and Braydan Perkins (40). Braxton Brummel led Trinity Christian with a 44.

The Hawks (3-3 in WEC) host Remsen St. Mary's on April 29; play a rescheduled meet at MMCRU on April 30; and travel to LeMars for a meet with Gehlen Catholic on May 4.
