The Hartley Farmers Mutual fire truck joined the Ocheyedan firemen in fighting flames that completely destroyed the Luinstra garage at May City. The flames originated in the rear of the workroom. Thanks to quick response of the community, nearby buildings were saved.

August Brand, formerly of Storm Lake, rented the building south of the Hartley Liquor Store, previously occupied by Pilley’s cream station. After completing extensive remodeling of the building, Mr. Brand was ready to open a shoe repair business.

S/Sgt. Ervin H. Westphalen lost his life in an accident which occurred in the center of Paris, France. He was buried in the Solers American Military Cemetery in France. He was described as a hard worker, a good soldier and an outstanding leader.

New directors elected to the Hartley Chamber of Commerce board were Walt Ronnfeldt, Jim Colling and Ed Rons. Steve Baumgarten was named president of the Chamber.

Dr. George Wingerson, local dentist, had the misfortune of breaking his left arm below the elbow when he fell on the ice at the skating rink. He was taken to Sioux City where doctors performed a rare operation in which part of the bone was removed. The arm was expected to be fully functional after it healed and there would be no loss of movement or strength.

The Hartley Chamber of Commerce awarded lifetime memberships to Beverly Heimsoth and Walter Ronnfeldt. Chamber members and the Hartley Ambassadors also conducted a ribbon cutting at United Community Bank. The ribbon was cut by David Gonnerman, president of UCB.

Council members Bev Heimsoth and Walt Ronnfeldt, City Clerk/Administrator Kay Cmelik and Superintendent of Public Works Bryan Gerritson were appointed to serve on a committee charged with developing plans for a residential subdivision in an area owned by the city. A fifth member not connected with city government would also be appointed.

Jan. 24, 1996 was an important date in the history of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn wrestling program. That was when H-M-S defeated Sheldon, 36-30, to record the team’s first varsity dual victory. It came in a double dual that also included West Lyon.
