Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, lists of precautions and rules now greet spectators when they enter the H-M-S baseball and softball complex in Hartley.

Two area high school programs have had their summer seasons impacted because each has at least one player exposed to COVID-19.

The Gehlen Catholic baseball team suspended its season for at least two weeks after a player tested positive for COVID-19. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was to have played at LeMars last Friday in a makeup game, but the contest was cancelled when the positive test result was reported.

H-M-S's softball team did play at LeMars on Friday to make up their game with the Jays.

According to Gehlen Catholic baseball coach and athletic director Kirk Kronaizl, the suspension means no practices or games for 14 days. That will leave only one week before postseason play begins, which raises questions as to whether the Jays will play whatever regular season games are left on their schedule.

George-Little Rock and Central Lyon jointly announced that multiple players in their combined softball program had direct contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19. The players are required to be self-quarantined for 14 days. They will be able to return to practices and competition on June 25.

Coaches and other players in the program are considered third degree contacts and they will self-monitor for any symptoms of COVID-19. The schools announced they plan to continue G-LR/CL's varsity schedule.
