Taking their place among the Siouxland's best

Bryce Dodge second, James Gellerman third at conference tourney

Eleven Okoboji/HMS wrestlers were place-finishers at the 2023 Siouxland Conference tournament, which was held Feb. 4 at Sioux Center.

The Pioneers' Noah Strantz was the champion at 160 pounds and four others, including H-M-S senior Bryce Dodge, wrestled in the title match of their respective weights.

Dodge won his quarterfinal match by pinning James Bullerman of West Lyon in 42 seconds. He also won by fall (1:03) in a semifinal match with Kooper Huss of MOC-Floyd Valley. Coy DeBoer of Sheldon/South O'Brien then defeated Dodge by technical fall in the title match, 16-0/3:53.

Other Okoboji/HMS wrestlers who placed second were Dylan Jones at 120 pounds, Nathaniel Franklin at 170 and Sam Pas at 220.

James Gellerman placed third at 182 pounds. He won a major decision (11-3) in his quarterfinal match with Beau Weber of MOC-FV. After losing by fall in 49 seconds to Jarrett Roos of Sheldon/South O'Brien in the semifinals, Gellerman pinned Alex Bosma of Sibley-Ocheyedan (1:11) in the consolation semifinals and won a 4-2 decision over Brendan Lamfers of Sioux Center in the third-place match.

Ethan Wiersma was a sixth-place finisher at 195 pounds. He lost by fall to Jacques Zomermaand of Sioux Center in the quarterfinals (1:23) and to Zach Brinkman of Sheldon/South O'Brien in the consolation semifinals (4:26). Kevin Quijada of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley then won a major decision over Wiersma (16-4) in the fifth-place match.

The Pioneers' Mike Gonnerman placed third at 113 pounds. Placing sixth were Cole Becker at 126 pounds, Dillion Wittrock at 132 and Keyshawn Smith at 285.

As a team, the Pioneers finished fourth with 142 points. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley topped the standings with 180 points, Sioux Center was runner-up with 166 and Central Lyon/GLR was third with 157.5. Following Okoboji/HMS were Sheldon/South O'Brien 129, MOC-Floyd Valley 112, West Lyon 107 and Sibley-Ocheyedan 93.5.
