Hawks drop final 2 War Eagle matches

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn missed an opportunity to earn its fourth War Eagle Conference win of the season at MMCRU on Oct. 11. The Hawks dropped the five-set match by scores of 25-18, 17-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 9-15.

H-M-S had the early momentum in the first set but MMCRU broke open a tight score in the next one to tie the match. The Hawks won the third set after rallying from a five-point deficit, but could not repeat that scenario in the fourth. The Royals jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the tie-breaker. H-M-S rallied to within two but MMCRU used a strong finish to claim the set and the match.

MMCRU had a 46-38 edge in kills but H-M-S had more blocks (14-10) and digs (94-90). The Royals' serving efficiency was 94.3 percent while the Hawks' was 88.9.

Abby Douma recorded 12 kills, Elise Haack, Abby Kunzman and Emily Mutombo each had seven and Kylee Schiphoff added five. Frankie Mohni put up 34 set assists.

Defensively, Schiphoff had one solo block and seven assists, Kunzman had three assists and Mutombo had two. Leaders in digs were Haack 24, Abby Otto 23, Mutombo 15, Kunzman 13 and Mohni 11. Douma and Schiphoff each contributed four digs.

Kunzman was 29-of-29 in serving with four aces; Haack was 15-of-16; Schiphoff was 12-of-13, Mutombo was 10-of-11, Mohni was 12-of-16 with two aces, and Otto was 8-of-11.

• vs. Akron-Westfield

The Hawks were back on the road to Akron for the final match of the regular season. Akron-Westfield won the match on Oct. 13 by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-14.

Haack led the defense with 20 digs, Mutombo had 11, Otto had eight, Kunzman had five and Mohni had four.

At the net, the Westerners outpaced H-M-S in kills (36-21). For the Hawks, Douma put down nine kills, Haack had five, Schiphoff had four and Kunzman added three.

Morgan Grooters and Kunzman were both 8-of-8 in serving, Haack was 10-of-11, Mutombo was 7-of-8 and Otto was 7-of-9.

After starting 2-2, the Hawks won just one of their final six War Eagle Conference matches to finish with a 3-7 record. Overall, H-M-S was 8-16 in the regular season.
