Okoboji/HMS crowns 2 Siouxland champions

Pioneers finish fourth out of 8 conference teams

Aaron Ortiz intends to take down Jayme Van Wyhe of CL/GLR in the fifth-place match at the Siouxland Conference tourney. Ortiz finished sixth at 145 pounds.

Two individual titles and four runner-up finishes were highlights of Okoboji/HMS's night at the 2022 Siouxland Conference wrestling tournament. Sioux Center hosted the meet on Jan. 28.

Dylan Jones and Caleb Jones won back-to-back championships at 120 and 126 pounds. Pioneers who placed second were Tyce Hanson (113), Noah Strantz (152), Nathaniel Franklyn (160) and Jesse Bockman (170).

The best finish for wrestlers from H-M-S was fourth place by Nick Bronstad at 285 pounds. The senior lost by fall to Ethan Hooyer of Sioux Center in the semifinals (3:31), won by technical fall (17-1/4:00) over Kayden Van Berkum of Central Lyon/GLR, and lost by fall to Jesus Garcia of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in the third-place match (2:52).

James Gellerman finished fifth at 182 pounds. He lost by fall to Evan Kruger of CL/GLR (3:02) and Emmit Fleshman of West Lyon (2:59). In the fifth place match, Gellerman won a major decision over Jesus Ramirez of MOC-Floyd Valley (12-0).

Aaron Ortiz placed sixth at 145 pounds. He lost by fall to Kooper Huss of MOC-Floyd Valley (1:54) and Ben Bahnson of West Lyon (1:35) before dropping the fifth-place match by fall to Jayme Van Wyhe of CL/GLR (4:55).

Ethan Wiersma did not place at 195 pounds. He lost by fall to Gabe Ter Wee of West Lyon (2:45) and to Keaton Sampson of Sheldon/South O'Brien (2:35).

Other place finishers for Okoboji/HMS were Sam Pas, third, at 220 pounds and Bryce Sehman, sixth, at 138.

The Pioneers scored 149.5 points and finished fourth among the eight Siouxland teams. West Lyon won the tournament title with 179.5 points, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley was second with 159.5 and MOC-Floyd Valley was third with 152.5.

Following Okoboji/HMS were Central Lyon/GLR with 147.5 points, Sioux Center with 125.5, Sheldon/South O'Brien with 124 and Sibley-Ocheyedan with 61.

• Okoboji/HMS wrestlers to compete at sectional

Estherville-Lincoln Central will host a Class 2A wrestling sectional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 5. Matches begin at noon.

Teams assigned to Sectional 13 are Algona, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, E-LC, Okoboji/HMS, Pocahontas Area and Webster City. First and second place winners in each weight class will advance to the district tournament at Webster City, on Feb. 12.

Qualifiers from Sectional 14 at Osage will also advance to the district meet. Schools competing at Osage on Saturday are Clear Lake, Forest City, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, Hampton-Dumont, Iowa Falls-Alden and Osage.
