Odelia Schlichte, 2, waves to the Summer Celebration crowd during the parade in Hartley on Saturday. She was riding in one of Everly Fire & Rescue's trucks with her parents, Scotti and Kayla Schlichte.

It's been a while since we've all been able to get together for a little fun. With the pandemic shelving everything last year, folks were looking forward to a return to normal this summer.

Local residents were able to do just that last weekend in Hartley and Everly. Summer Celebration returned to form and Everly Fire & Rescue's 100th anniversary celebration complemented Community Day last Saturday. Suffice it to say, everyone had good time.

These local events don't happen in a vacuum – they take months of meticulous planning and organizing by dedicated volunteers. These people commit their time to getting these celebrations off the ground, and those efforts should not be ignored. Our communities would be much more boring without them.

We can all be thankful this summer has resembled "normal" as much as possible. To say the least, the past year has been trying. Events like Summer Celebration and Everly Community Day remind us that we have a special thing going in our neck of the woods, and it's nice to get out with our neighbors and have a good time.

If you see one of the organizers of these events, tell them thank you. Their efforts are appreciated and make things more vibrant around here. Their willingness to volunteer should never be taken for granted.

Thanks for a great weekend!
