Doris E. Nagel, 99, Hartley

Funeral services for Doris E. Nagel were held Monday, Sept. 21, 2020, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Pastor Lynn Dau officiated.

Casket bearers were Kyle Ebel, Korey Ebel, Mitch Ahrenstorff, Shane Ahrenstorff, Chad Ahrenstorff and Ryan Brown. Honorary casket bearers were Lana Endorf, Christiana Junge, Stacie DeHaan and Lindie Midtgaard. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Warner Funeral Home in Spencer assisted with the arrangements.

Doris Elizabeth Gonnerman and her twin brother, Moris, were born Feb. 12, 1921, to William and Anna (Nelson) Gonnerman on a farm northwest of Hartley. They were welcomed by their sister, Leona, and brothers Vaun, Donald and Gerald. She attended elementary school at Lincoln #6 country school and graduated from Hartley High School in 1938.

Doris was a lifelong member of Trinity United Church of Christ, being baptized on June 11, 1922 and confirmed on March 21, 1937.

After graduating from high school, Doris was a telephone operator in Hartley. On Aug. 5, 1945, Doris was married to William “Bill” Nagel. They were blessed with 54 years of marriage. They made their home on a farm north of Hartley where they farmed for 38 years. To this marriage were born four daughters: Connie, Barbara, Joan and Lori.

Doris enjoyed gardening, sewing, making potato salad and baking her special “Grandma’s Buns” that were a must at every holiday gathering. Doris loved hosting the family for holiday dinners which she cooked up until the age of 95. The family enjoyed many wonderful times at their cottage on Big Spirit Lake with their annual July 4th chicken barbecue. Doris and Bill enjoyed going to Mission, Texas for many winters. Doris was active in Dorcas and enjoyed sewing quilt tops and also playing cards.

Doris moved to Community Memorial Assisted Living in November 2017, where she lived before moving to the Memory Care Unit. Her daughters were blessed to be reunited with her during her last week before she passed away on Sept. 15, 2020, at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; grandson, Lonnie Ebel; and great-grandson, Callan Midtgaard.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and spouses: Connie and Denny Ebel, Barbara and Randy Ahrenstorff, Joan and Doug Brown, and Lori and Jeff Towne; grandchildren: Kyle and Rochelle Ebel, Korey and Jonna Ebel, Lana and Kevin Endorf, Mitch Ahrenstorff, Shane and Haley Ahrenstorff, Chad Ahrenstorff, Christiana and Casey Junge, Ryan and Emily Brown, Stacie and Tyler DeHaan, and Lindie and Jeff Midtgaard; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
