The board of directors of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce elected W.R. Wagner to fill the unexpired term of Gerald Goetsch as secretary of the local business group. Goetsch had ably served in that capacity since the induction of Ingwer L. Hansen into the armed services.

Gerald Epping and his brother-in-law, Carl Hain, purchased the Coast to Coast store from Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Brooks, who had owned the business since May when they took over from Mr. and Mrs. Joe Burley. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks were moving to California where he would be employed.

Louis ReMillard returned to Hartley High School to complete his senior year. He had been in the Merchant Marine since June. A ruling by the Selective Service permitted students to complete their senior year if they were in their first or second semester’s work.

Mayor Harold Bojens announced that James Heathcote, Jr., of Des Moines, was named Chief of Police to replace Lew Trusty. Heathcote had police experience and had been employed by the Super Valu stores as a security officer. He was to begin his duties on Nov. 1 and would be primarily on night duty.

Milo Peters was elected president of the Hartley school board and Marlin Vetter was the vice president. Gale Bobolz was named board secretary to replace Harry Olhausen, who resigned effective Nov. 1.

Two accidents occurred at almost the same spot on Highway 18, three miles west of Hartley. The first occurred when a Superior woman lost control of her pickup during a rainstorm. The pickup rolled over in the south ditch. Three hours later another pickup hit the same slick spot, causing a Chino, Calif. man to lose control. His pickup went into the north ditch and broke a telephone pole and damaged a farm fence.

Jonna Conway and Carl Koedam reigned as Homecoming queen and king at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School. Other royalty candidates were Shannon Elgersma, Terri Naber, Sally Pry, Lee Bunge, Wade Daggett and Mike Mohni.

Homecoming class representatives for 1995 were freshmen Jodi Epping and Kyle Vogt, sophomores Tresa Conway and Korey Ebel, and juniors Michele Dummett and Rory Marra.

Hartley area residents showed their generosity during two drives. Nearly 10,000 pounds of clothing and small household items were donated to Goodwill Industries/Wall Street Mission. The Red Cross bloodmobile collected 95 units of blood during a visit to Hartley. There were three first-time donors.
