The men’s league at the Hartley Bowling Alleys began their season. Twenty-four men’s teams were bowling on Monday, Tuesday and Friday each week. The women’s league was preparing for their season.

A new rotating schedule was set up by the schools of the Sioux Valley Conference to take effect with the 1946 football season. Each school was assigned three contestants and over a period of three years they would have to play all schools in the conference. Hartley had to play Sanborn, Milford and Sutherland each year, along with one other conference school to rate for the championship.

Clinton Cooper, O’Brien County dairyman, was presented his second gold watch by Wallace’s Farmer and Iowa Homestead in recognition of having a bull win the sire index contest. For the first time since the contest started in 1930, the same dairyman had come up with a winner for two years running.

Approximately 100 persons attended the O’Brien County American Legion and Legion Auxiliary meeting in Hartley. District Commander Herb Neumann presented lifetime memberships to Legion members Clarence Bracker, John Brandt, George Denny, Will Hesse, Warren Houston, Louis Jensen, Albert Koechert, Harry Lynam, Herman Miller, Leo Parks, Lloyd Pearson, Lee Pohlman, Martin Sonksen, Henry Wieditz and Fred Winkelhaus.

The school election held here was one of the largest in Hartley in several years, with a total vote of 740. The large turnout was due to opposition on the ticket and an active campaign by the candidates. Milo Peters was re-elected to represent Area No. III, 375-326, over Merlyn Schoelerman. Donald Treimer was voted in as the new director for Area No. IV, defeating Jarold Jager by a margin of 450-274.

David Christenson and Brad Smith, members of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn school board, accepted keys to the new middle school addition from Ed Storm, of FEH and Associates, architects for the project. State and area legislative and educational representatives, contractors and architects were present for the ceremonies held at the middle school in Sanborn.

Retiring H-M-S school board members David Christenson and Merne Haack were presented plaques in recognition of their service to the district. Both had served on the H-M-S board since 1991, with Christenson serving as president during that time. He began serving on the Hartley board in 1980 while Haack joined the Sanborn board in 1987.
