    Each year, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn fifth graders complete a flag unit in language arts class. They learn about flag etiquette, the history of the United States flag, and the different branches of the U.S. military. The students, along with their teacher, Angie Mayer, even go through each part of the U.S. Flag Code. At the end of the unit, the students are left with a better understanding of what the flag represents and how to show it respect. They then write an essay of 300 words or less...

    The weather couldn't have been better on Monday for the kickoff of Clay Central/Everly's reinstated K-6 Maverick Relays. The event was hosted at the former CC/E football field and track in Royal. The day was divided in two, with K-2 grade events hosted in the morning and 3-6 grade events in the afternoon.     • May 12, 1949 L.B. Wanless and B.W. Thomas purchased the Cowan Implement Co. from Lyle Gowan, who had operated the Allis-Chalmers implement store for three years. Wanless planned to occupy the house where the Gowan family resided. Gowan planned to take an indefinite vacation. During an electric storm and heavy rain, lightning struck a large cottonwood tree just east of the H.J. Grotewohl home. Branches fell to the ground in flames, but the rain prevented further damage.
