1949: New vocal and band director at HHS

• June 2, 1949

Frank Miles, former editor of the Iowa Legionnaire and veteran of both world wars, addressed those in attendance at Memorial Park in Pleasant View Cemetery. He emphasized that Memorial Day should mean as much to those who did not have servicemen in the war as those who did or lost them.

Superintendent John W. Harold announced that Darwyn V. Snyder, of Sioux City, was selected as the vocal and band instructor for Hartley High School. He also had charge of the town band. Mr. Snyder was a graduate of Morningside College and previously taught music at Hawarden.

• May 30, 1974

Mrs. Laura Brehmer was completing 26 years of service in the Hartley school lunch program. She was also retiring as lunchroom manager. She began as an assistant to Mrs. Pete Mohr, who was the manager when the program started in the fall of 1947, and then became lunchroom manager two years later.

Hartley Christian Reformed Church welcomed Rev. Thomas Vander Ziel as pastor. A graduate of Calvin Theological Seminary, he was recently ordained. Before entering the ministry, Rev. Vander Ziel served for two years in the Peace Corps in India.

The Hartley High School Symphonic Band performed at the Iowa Bandmasters Association Convention in Des Moines. The band traveled by charter bus, using funds they had raised since receiving the invitation. The band, which was directed by Jim Schroeder and Ronald Arndt, performed four pieces at the convention.

• June 3, 1999

Five flags were added to the Hartley Avenue of Flags during the Memorial Day service. Flags were dedicated in memory of Robert Fahlenkamp, Walter Jenkins, Eldon Paulsen, Delbert Schwien and Wilbert Fredericks. Father David Hemann was the speaker at the service.

Midwest Tennis and Track was the low bidder for the surfacing system, track and lane lines for the all-weather track at H-M-S High School. Rohlin Construction received the contract for grading and asphalt paving, and Stofferan Excavation was awarded the contract for installing the subsurface drainage.
