1948: Mayor appointed to lead city’s oil committee

• Feb. 19, 1948

Roger Lathrop, Membership Drive Chairman, announced the Red Cross drive chairmen for the towns and townships throughout O’Brien County. Local chairmen were Kermit Kloppenburg, Hartley Township; Mrs. Loretta Treimer, Hartley; and Mrs. Ed Olhausen, Omega Township.

With the return of warmer weather, the hot lunch program at the Hartley Public School was being discontinued. The program was held in the Legion Hall due to crowded conditions in the school. The Hartley schools planned to have a year-round lunch program the following year in a building erected for that purpose.

The town council appointed Mayor P.A. Leese as chairman of a local emergency oil committee in Hartley. Those who were unable to obtain any fuel oil through their regular channels could contact the mayor for assistance.

• Feb. 15, 1973

A giant Washington Birthday Sellebration was planned by the Hartley Chamber of Commerce. Businesses were featuring specials on merchandise, and the Chamber was planning to serve free cherry pie at either L&L Café or Red’s Café.


The first meeting and practice of the Hartley Community Chorus was scheduled at the high school music room. Darlene Fett was the director. Forty-seven persons had initially registered to participate in the group.

The school board affirmed the local resident employment policy which stated, “It shall be the policy of the board that no local resident shall be employed in any teaching capacity unless a vacancy has not been filled by a suitable applicant prior to July 1. A teacher who is employed by the district, and who marries a local man, may continue in employment until such time as she desires to resign her position.”


• Feb. 19, 1998

The value of building projects in Hartley for which permits were issued during 1997 totaled approximately $815,500. New construction included three houses and two others which were moved into Hartley, two larger storage/machine sheds, the Terra office building, and two building additions. A total of 52 building permits were issued, half of which were for smaller projects.

Fifteen Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School students were welcomed into the Spanish Honor Society during the Initiation Ritual. The local chapter, called Octavio Paz, was organized in 1996.
