• Baler destroyed by fire

The Hartley Fire Department extinguished a fire in a baler on Oct. 26 south of Hartley, near 340th Street and Walnut Avenue. Water and foam were used to extinguish the fire which totaled the baler. A hot bearing is suspected to be the cause.

• Arrested on several charges

Thaddeus Currans, 45, of Spencer, was arrested in the 10 block of West 3rd Street in Spencer at 9:40 p.m. on Oct. 27.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that a deputy attempted to stop Currans while he was on a bicycle. Currans refused to stop and led officers on a short chase. He was arrested for an active Clay County warrant. Numerous items of drug paraphernalia were found during a subsequent search.

Currans was booked into the Clay County jail for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Interference with Official Acts and the warrant. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department and the Iowa Department of Narcotics Enforcement.

• Sioux Rapids man arrested in Spencer

A Clay County deputy attempted to stop Benjamin Schroeder, 40, of Sioux Rapids, at 10:49 p.m. on Oct. 26 in the 100 block of West 2nd Street in Spencer. Schroeder fled from the deputy and was later located in the 200 block of West 2nd Street. He refused to comply with officers and was placed under arrest.

A search of Schroeder found marijuana, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He was charged with Interference with Official Acts, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and a bicycle lamp violation, all simple misdemeanors; and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana and Methamphetamine (3rd), both class “D” felonies. He was held to appear before the magistrate.

• Illegal possession of vaping products, drugs

During a traffic stop for a speeding violation at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 in the 4600 mile of Highway 71, a Clay County deputy found that James Martin, 20, of Alta, was in possession of vaping products under the legal age of 21. A further search discovered more vaping products, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Martin was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, a serious misdemeanor; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Speeding, Dark Windows and Minor in Possession of Tobacco, all simple misdemeanors. He was held to appear before the magistrate.
