City Administrator Erica Haack said design plans for Hartley's new pool are being fine-tuned for a May 25 bid letting.

It will be a while before dirt churns, but the start of construction for Hartley's new pool is inching closer.

City Administrator Erica Haack said design plans are being fine-tuned for a May 25 bid letting. Once a contract is awarded, construction of the new aquatic center will begin in earnest.

Project manager Michael Fisher said during last month's council meeting that three construction companies have expressed interest in the project.

"We haven't heard any different, and we're hopeful we'll get some competitive bids," said Haack. "Things are on track."

Barring unforeseen delays, the new aquatic center is hoped to open next year sometime between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. It has an estimated price tag of $3 million.

The pool will remain at its current location in Neebel Park. The area was surveyed during the past month, and Haack said no major changes to the preliminary design have been necessary. The square footage of the new pool will be comparable to the current one.

Once constructed, the facility will include a zero-entry play area with a family slide, four swimming lanes, deep water diving and swim area, basketball hoops and a volleyball net, new bathhouse, and a large deck area with shaded zones. Groundbreaking is hoped to take place in June, and there will be no pool season in Hartley this year due to construction.

Hartley's current pool was built in 1958. The last major updates occurred in 1996.
