• Driver leaves vehicle after accident

The driver of a vehicle found in the ditch was cited after leaving the scene of the accident that occurred on Nov. 26.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 11:04 p.m. stating there was a vehicle in the ditch with no driver on the scene. The deputy responding to the call could not locate the driver. He stated that the 2010 Mazda MZ6 appeared to have been westbound in the 6700 mile of 470th Street where it entered the north ditch and continued west for approximately 150 yards. The vehicle vaulted the east embankment of Warbler Avenue and went airborne, clearing the road and landing approximately 10 yards beyond the west embankment. It spun and came to rest on the field embankment of the north ditch of 470th Street.

The deputy reported photographing an open container of alcohol in the center console cup holder and a nametag on a suitcase in the back seat, identified as belonging to Jennifer Lynn Peterson, 44, of Sibley. Osceola County deputies assisted in trying to locate Peterson but she was not at her home.

Peterson initially called the sheriff’s office on Nov. 27 stating she wanted to get items out of her vehicle. She then met with the investigating deputy on Nov. 30 and stated she was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred at 10 p.m. She had looked down and when she looked up, she swerved to miss a deer on the roadway. Peterson was given a ride by an unknown person to a nearby town where she spent the night. She called for a ride the next morning and was taken to Osceola Regional Health Center in Sibley for treatment of a broken ankle.

The report stated that Peterson had knowledge of the can of alcohol in the cup holder.

Damage to the Mazda was estimated at $5,000. Peterson was cited for Fail to Report Accident – Death or Personal Injury, Failure to Maintain Control and Open Container – Driver 21 Years Old and Older.

Guinn was not injured. Damage to the van was estimated at $5,000.

The vehicles struck their driver side wheels. The wheel of the Volkswagen was bent out of the wheel well and twisted against the side of the vehicle west of the impact site in the south ditch. The wheel of the Dodge, which slid east of the impact site, was ripped off and landed in the south ditch. The report stated that indentations in the roadway at the point of impact were two feet across the centerline, indicating the outside of Stofferan’s vehicle was across the centerline.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the Volkswagen was estimated at $1,000 and damage to the Dodge was estimated at $1,500. Stofferan was cited for Failure to Yield Half of Roadway.
