  • The mighty, mighty Mavericks

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Oct 5, 2023

They may be small in size, but that didn't stop Clay Central/Everly Elementary students from putting on a mighty display of school spirit last week. The Mavericks marked Homecoming with a parade, dress up days, pep rally and other events Sept. 25-29. It was the second-straight year the elementary-only district celebrated the event, which was shelved in 2019 when the district ceased offering grades 7-12 due to low enrollment. Like last year, CC/E Outreach & Culture Coordinator Iesha Toft led...

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Oct 5, 2023

In the face of such low numbers, Wood last week suggested the board start exploring options like combining classes into multi-age rooms. For example, kindergartners could...

About 810 miles of the initially proposed system lies in Iowa, but the company said it is...

  • Local newspapers still play vital role

    Sonny Albarado|Oct 5, 2023

There's been a lot of hand-wringing in recent years about the death of local newspapers, those bastions of democracy and chroniclers of community. While the loss of any newspaper hurts the people they serve, residents of rural areas and small towns are hit especially hard when a newspaper shuts down. When a local newspaper closes, citizens lose impartial news and information about town and county government, school boards, local athletic teams, academic awards, county fairs and the mundane and...

  • Letters: Let's review simple arithmetic

    Oct 5, 2023

To the editor: The difference between 33 and 32 is 1. Let’s call 1 a small number. When you put the word billion behind that small number, it becomes huge. A billion is a million thousands. Nine hundred ninety-nine compared to 1 is enormous. When that small number 1 is followed by the word trillion, it equals the huge billion MORE than the enormous 999 huge billions. In the House, there is a (small number of right wing holdouts) and the rest of the members. The two groups can’t agree on a funding package. When you understand simple ari...

Prior to the overtime period in Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's game on Sept. 29 at South O'Brien, Hawk coach Jay Eilers challenged his team to not take "no" for an answer and earn the win. The Hawks responded in the extra period, scoring on a 10-yard run by James Gellerman. But the two-point conversion attempt failed and H-M-S had to settle for a six-point lead. South O'Brien tied the score on an eight-yard pass and then untied it with a PAT, giving them the 29-28 victory. "I think we played hard at...
