Missed opportunities

Hawks can't take advantage of chances in 2 losses

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn squandered opportunities at the plate and in the field during a pair of softball losses last week.

The Hawks did not generate much offense until the final inning of a 7-4 loss at South O'Brien on May 28. The Wolverines' five runs in the second inning settled the outcome. They also scored a run in the first inning and again in the sixth.

"Tensions and frustrations were high on the field that in the end affected our batting and fielding," Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad acknowledged. "Again, take away the one inning and we win the game."

Delaney Murphy hit a single and Frankie Mohni followed with a double to start the offense in the seventh inning. Kinsey Schirmer, Gracie Knobloch and Natalie Daggett each drove in a run with a single, and Kamryn Ebel picked up an RBI with a groundout.

Hit totals for both teams mirrored their run production. Also having hits for H-M-S were Eliza Tewes and Ebel.

Knobloch was the losing pitcher. She allowed four hits, walked four and struck out eight. Only two of the Wolverines' runs were earned.

• Tigers' late runs sink H-M-S

Trinity Christian used a pair of six-run scoring innings late in the game to defeat H-M-S, 15-8, on May 29 at Hull.

H-M-S led 7-3 after four innings. Otto's single in the first inning drove in both runs and Knobloch's two-out single was the big hit in a two-run second inning. Schirmer's home run in the fourth drove in two of H-M-S's three runs.

"Bats were hot most of the game and the girls did a nice job base running," Bronstad said.

The Tigers narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in the third inning. They took the lead with six runs in the fourth inning and added six in the sixth. Mohni's single in the seventh drove in H-M-S's final run.

"Our outfield beat themselves and missed some opportunities to catch some catchable fly balls," Bronstad noted.

H-M-S finished with 11 hits, including three by Mohni and two each by Daggett, Knobloch and Schirmer.

Ebel did a "nice job" in the pitcher's circle. She allowed 12 hits, walked three and struck out six.

H-M-S (1-5, 0-2) hosts Remsen St. Mary's (1A No. 5) on June 10 and Emmetsburg on June 11. The Hawks also play at Gehlen Catholic on June 12.

The game with Gehlen Catholic on May 31 was postponed to June 28, and the Sheldon tournament on June 1 was cancelled.
