1949: Weber wins SUI Kinnick Scholarship

• May 26, 1949

Commencement exercises for the Moneta High School were held at the Moneta Hall. Rev. Harrison Dawes, pastor of the Methodist Church at Eagle Grove, was the speaker. Marianne Meyer was valedictorian of the class of six graduates and Renee Lynam was salutatorian.

Kenneth Weber, son of Pastor and Mrs. A.C. Weber of Hartley, was one of five winners of the Kinnick Scholarship at the State University of Iowa. The one-year scholarship was renewable if the holder maintained a high level of scholarship, leadership and participation in campus activities.

Ingwer L. Hansen was elected to the office of District Commander of the American Legion at the 9th District Conference. His opponent was nominated from the floor. Hansen was the second person from Hartley to serve as District Commander. F.A. Albright was elected to the post in 1932.

• May 23, 1974

During a Mother’s Tea and “Fly-up” ceremony, seven Brownies said goodbye to their troops and went across the bridge to receive their wings, enabling them to become Girl Scouts in the fall. The Girl Scouts also entertained those present with the puppet show “Snow White.”

Home Federal Savings and Loan Association, of Sioux City, submitted an application to the Federal Home Loan Board for permission to establish a branch office in Hartley. If approved, the office was to be located in the former office of Treimer’s Insurance and Farmers Mutual Insurance Association.

Sixty-five seniors at Hartley High School received their diplomas. The commencement speaker was Dr. Donald L. Hansen, head of the Department of School Administration and Personnel Service at the University of Northern Iowa.

• May 27, 1999

Sixth graders tested their physical abilities by rappelling off the side of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School in Sanborn. National Guardsmen helped students rappel from the top of the building. The activity concluded a unit in which the students read about mountain climbing.

The Hartley Senior Wellness Center arranged a “Gay 90’s” event for residents who were 90 years of age or older. Those honored were Doris Cummings, age 98; George Playford and Hattie Mast, 96; Edna Rahn, 95; Leola Anderson, 94; Ella Menke, 92; Edna Sickelka, 91; and Leonard Glaser, 90. Nancy Coulter was mistress of ceremonies.

Jay Koedam, of Hartley, was honored as the Male Athlete of the Year at Ellsworth Community College. Forty-four students received awards for achievements in academics, athletics and fine arts.
