The farther the better

Throwers, distance runners score points at WEC boys' meet

Distance mattered for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the boys' competition of the War Eagle Conference track and field meet. The Hawks scored well in the throwing and long running events during the meet on April 29 at Marcus.

Two seniors finished near the top of the discus throw standings. Adam Schierholz was the runner-up with a throw of 141'10" and Jacob Cates was third at 135'10". Senior Bryce Ortega finished fifth in the shot put. His best effort was 42'6".

George Vargas ran well in two long-distance races. The senior placed fourth in the 3200-meter run (11:28.61) and fifth in the 1600-meter run (5:17.47). Ryan Grotluschen added a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:15.04).

H-M-S also scored points in two longer relay events. Caleb Grotluschen, Graham Lux, Aidan Espeland and Damian Dodge placed fourth in the distance medley (4:18.38), and Nathaniel Ball, Carter Dolphin, Blaine Finster and R. Grotluschen finished fifth in the 4x800 (9:36.92).

Other individual results were: 100 – C. Grotluschen, 10th, :12.71; Ethan Wiersma, 17th, :13.58. 200 – C. Grotluschen, ninth, :25.78; Espeland, 15th, :26.58. 400 – Dolphin, eighth, :57.18. 800 – Finster, 10th, 2:32.64. 1600 – Easton Teal, eighth, 5:30.84. 3200 – Teal, eighth, 13:11.97. 400 hurdles – Ball, 11th, 1:10.83. Shot put – Cates, eighth, 40'9".

H-M-S also placed seventh in the 4x400 relay, run by Lux, Dolphin, Ball and R. Grotluschen (4:01.72).

MMCRU won the boys' team title with 151 points and Hinton was runner-up with 132. Remaining scores were Gehlen Catholic 83, South O'Brien 73.5, George-Little Rock 58, H-M-S 30, West Sioux 22, Trinity Christian 16, Harris-Lake Park 12.5, and Akron-Westfield 10.

The Hawks finished second as a team during the Wolverine Relays on May 2 at Paullina. Only four teams competed, as three that were invited could not participate.

South O'Brien won the team title with 189 points, H-M-S finished second with 121, George-Little Rock scored 96 and Trinity Christian finished with 12.

Event winners were George Vargas in the 3200 (11:46.19) and 1600 (5:25.54); and Carter Dolphin in the 400-meter dash (:56.19). Nathaniel Ball, Dolphin, Damian Dodge and Blaine Finster combined to win the 4x800 relay (9:36.72).

Individuals competing included: 100 – Caleb Grotluschen, fourth, :12.56; Graham Lux, seventh. 200 – C. Grotluschen, third, :24.79; Lux, fifth, :26.13. 400 – Ryan Grotluschen, second, :56.31. 800 – Dodge, second, 2:30.34. 1600 – Easton Teal, third, 5:38.52. 3200 – Teal, third, 11:58.93. 400 hurdles – Ball, third, 1:07.99. Shot put – Jacob Cates, third, 41'6-3/4"; Damion Hansen, sixth, 35'3-3/4". Long jump – Dodge, third, 16'5-1/2".

Other relay results were: Distance medley – C. Grotluschen, Lux, Dodge, Finster, second, 4:26.84. 4x200 – Adam Schierholz, Kevin Arambula, Hansen, Cates, third, 1:58.54. 4x400 – Lux, Ball, R. Grotluschen, Dolphin, second, 3:55.32.

JV results included: 100 – Joe Buhrmann, fifth, :14.48; John Buhrmann, sixth, :14.51; Nathan Schreur, eighth. Shot put – Jacob Roelfs, second, 32'7-1/4"; Arambula, fifth, 29'10-1/2"; Cody Glackin, sixth.
