State qualifying track meet today at Armstrong

Track and field athletes from 14 area schools will compete in a Class 1A state qualifying meet today (May 9) at Armstrong. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and six other War Eagle Conference schools are among those assigned to the meet hosted by North Union.

The top place winner in each event plus the next 14 best performances statewide from qualifying meet place winners will advance to the state meet. The 2024 coed state track meet will be held May 16-18, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Girls’ regional golf begins Friday

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls’ golf team enters postseason play on Friday, May 10, competing in the 1A regional first round at the Aurelia Golf Course.

Alta-Aurelia, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire, Kingsley-Pierson/River Valley, MMCRU, Remsen St. Mary’s, Storm Lake St. Mary’s and Woodbury Central are the other teams in Region 1B.

The Top 2 teams and Top 6 individuals (including those tied for sixth) from three first-round sites advance to the regional final at the Buena Vista Golf Course near Storm Lake on Wednesday, May 15.

NWI Lightning win first game

The Northwest Iowa Lightning won its season opener last week on the road against the Albert Lea Grizzlies, 14-8.

The Lightning went down 8-0 in the first quarter and trailed until the fourth, scoring 14 unanswered points to lock up the win and move to 1-0 on the young season.

Scoring for the Lighnting were wide receiver Nick White and tight end Riley Vis, who hauled in one touchdown apiece. White finished with 53 receiving yards while Vis tallied 24 yards and also caught a two-point conversion. Wide receiver Trevor Smith finished with 26 yards.

Quarterback Kanthony Fletcher was 8-for-18 passing with 90 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Leading rushers were Omar Mejia (43 yards on eight carries) and Tyler Samuel (52 yards on 18 carries).

No defensive stats were available as of press deadline.

The Lightning will play its first home game Saturday, May 11 at the former CC/E High School in Everly at 2 p.m. They face the Midwest Rampage (0-1), who lost to Midwest Raptors last week 24-26.

Baseball season opens next week

Just as the high school spring sports seasons are winding down, the summer sports seasons are about to begin.

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team opens its season on Monday, May 13 against OABCIG at Ida Grove. The JV/V doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

H-M-S will host Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in a varsity-only game on Thursday, May 16, also at 5:30 p.m.
