H-M-S girls improve scoring at South O'Brien meet

After struggling to score points in their first meet, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' track and field team finished with 58 at the Wolverine Midseason Meet hosted by South O'Brien on April 11.

The top contributor to the team total was Lexi Croatt, who won the 800-meter run in a close finish (3:01.62) and finished third in the 1500-meter run (6:28.43). Alexis Grover was the runner-up in the shot put (27'9-1/2").

Other individual placings in the Top 6 were: 3000 – Jocelyn Abonce, third, 3:03.26. 1500 – Clara Funk, fifth, 8:08.74. 400 – Evelyn Steffen, fourth, 1:22.15. 100 – Pamela Mutombo, fifth, :15.80. 100-meter hurdles – Jessica Diaz, sixth, :27.02. Long jump – Payton Diehm, fifth, 12'3-1/4"; Madi Lauer, sixth, 11'5".

The Hawks finished fourth in four relays: 800 sprint medley – Diehm, Megan Otto, Mutombo, Abonce, 2:17.02; 4x200 – Diehm, Kynlee Dolphin, Steffen, Mutombo, 2:14.33; 4x100 – Diehm, Steffen, Otto, Mutombo, 1:01.99; 4x400 – Dolphin, Croatt, Abonce, Steffen, 5:34.05.

Hannah Tessum was H-M-S's best JV finisher, winning the shot put (25'2").

Team scores were South O'Brien 140, MMCRU 127, West Sioux 97, George-Little Rock 62 and H-M-S 58.

• 2 relays place at Unity Christian

H-M-S's first competition of the season was at the Unity Christian Coed, on April 8 at Orange City.

The Hawks placed in the Top 6 in two relay events: Distance medley – Diehm, Otto, Dolphin, Abonce, fifth, 5:43.27; and 4x100 – Diehm, Steffen, Otto and Mutombo, sixth, 1:00.44.

Croatt was just outside the Top 6 in two events, placing seventh in the 1500 (6:18.81) and the 3000 (13:33.65). Also placing seventh was the sprint medley relay team of Lauer, Mutombo, Steffen and Abonce (2:20.21).

MOC-Floyd Valley ran away with the team title, scoring 211 points. Unity Christian was second with 121, followed by Storm Lake 91, Western Christian 70, West Sioux 31, Sibley-Ocheyedan 10 and H-M-S 3.

The Hawks will host Akron-Westfield, George-Little Rock, Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji, Remsen St. Mary's, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Storm Lake St. Mary's and Trinity Christian at the H-M-S Relays on April 19. They will also compete at the Okoboji Relays on April 22.
