CC/E students learn life skills

Clay Central/Everly students in grades 2-6 enjoyed a short exploratory class as a large group in March and April. They first interviewed staff at the Spencer YMCA to learn about different types of fitness, and the benefits of them. They then got to try out several different activities at the Y to see which ones they enjoyed.

Later, when back at school, small groups of mixed ages worked collaboratively to research one particular topic (such as CrossFit, swimming, biking, etc.) and then they created a group PowerPoint on the topic. This was a great way for the older students to model some technology skills while assisting the younger students in trying their own hand at creating Google Presentation Slides.

Next, the presentations were shared with younger students at CC/E so they could practice public speaking skills and help others learn about the health benefits of staying fit. Finally, students in grades 2-6 were able to select fitness activities to try out – pickleball, basketball, walking, or Zumba.

Next year, the elementary school hopes to do short exploratory sessions similar to this a few times over the course of the school year. Mixed-age groups allow students to meet new friends, share common interests and teach others new skills.
