The Iowa Democratic Party on Tuesday released the unofficial results of its first-ever mail-in presidential preference caucus.

The party shifted to mail-in ballots this year after the Democratic National Committee moved on from Iowa holding the first-in-the-nation caucus, which it had done for decades. Preference cards were mailed out Jan. 12 through Feb. 19.

As expected, President Joe Biden won with 11,083 first place preference votes. "Uncommitted" was second with 480 votes, while Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson landed third and fourth place, respectively, with 362 and 268.

Overall turnout was 12,207 statewide. In the Fourth Congressional District, 1,953 Democrats mailed in cards. Story County reported the highest turnout in the district with 635 while Sac County was the lowest with four.

Local participation numbers were low. Twenty-seven people participated in Clay County, 10 from O'Brien and eight from Osceola.

Twenty-four Clay County Democrats voted for Biden while three went for Phillips. Turnout in O'Brien and Osceola counties was too low to report individual numbers. The results for both noted "insufficient turnout to protect voter privacy."
