Okoboji/HMS wrestlers complete dual season

The Siouxland Conference boys' wrestling dual season came to a close for Okoboji/HMS on Jan. 30 at Rock Valley. The Pioneers defeated MOC-Floyd Valley, 61-12, and lost to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, 42-28.

Four wrestlers, including two from H-M-S, were 2-0 for the night.

James Gellerman (190/175) won a major decision over Beau Weber of MOC-FV (14-1) and won by fall over Cozyn Rozeboom of BH/RV (1:23). Ethan Wiersma (215) won by fall over German Topete of MOC-FV (2:46) and Braidyn Cihlar of BH/RV (4:16).

Nathan Stofferan (113) won by forfeit and lost by fall to Cole Bomgaars of BH/RV (3:47). Bryce Ortega (285) was also 1-1, winning by forfeit and then losing by fall to Jesue Garcia of BH/RV (3:39).

Taylor Dykstra (150) lost by fall to Burke Uhl of MOC-FV (1:39).

Alex Rouse (157) and Sam Bockman (175/190) won both of their matches; Tyce Hanson (132) and Tyler Pyle (150) won a match; and Michael Gonnerman (120/126), Myles Lopez (120/126), Dillon Wittrock (144) and Nathaniel Franklin (165) were 1-1.


Dykstra also wrestled an extra (JV) match, losing a 12-10 decision to Blaize Johnson of MOC-FV.

The Pioneers' final dual records for 2023-24 were 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the Siouxland Conference.

Thirteen Okoboji/HMS wrestlers competed in an end of the year JV tournament hosted by MOC-Floyd Valley on Jan. 29. Two H-M-S athletes earned runner-up finishes and three others placed third in their respective brackets.

Placing second was Taylor Dykstra, who pinned Gabe Bustos of Cherokee (1:59) and lost by fall to Aaron Mendoza of Storm Lake (1:16). Mykle Meyers also placed second, winning a major decision over Bryan Arambula-Gutier of Storm Lake (11-3) and losing by fall to Ayden Miller of Sheldon/South O'Brien (5:47).


Austin Greer finished third, losing by fall to Connor Rush of Sergeant Bluff-Luton (1:10) and winning by fall over Alexander Duecker of Cherokee (1:17). Easton Teal lost a major decision to Thane Waterman of West Sioux (13-5) and won the third-place match with a decision over Carter Coots of SB-L (7-5).

The other third-place finisher was David Wetrich, who lost by fall to Colton Mouw of Sioux Center (1:29) and pinned Jean Dominguez-Lope (2:27).

Asher Knudtson was Okoboji/HMS's only champion. Finishing second were John Garcia and Cade Dodge. Third-place finishers were Zack Stecker and Tristan Strantz. Placing fourth were Jesse Hoffman, Lane Helgeson and Griffin O'Leary.
