A deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle for an alleged traffic violation in the 3000 mile of Highway 18 at 2 a.m. on Jan. 15. The deputy smelled marijuana while making contact with the driver. Further investigation indicated that a rear passenger, Shonterria Owens, 34, of Nashville, Tenn., was allegedly in possession of marijuana. A subsequent search found additional marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Owens was taken to the Clay County Jail and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana (first offense) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

• 3-vehicle accident north of Everly

Multiple vehicles were involved in an accident at the intersection of Highway 18 and 130th Avenue, known as Barb’s Corner.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that Douglas Von Arb, 63, of Maple Lake, Minn., was southbound on 130th Avenue and stopped for a stop sign. Von Arb pulled into intersection where his 2020 Chevrolet pickup collided with a 2024 Kenworth driven by Anthony Randall, 65, of Lake City, Minn., which was westbound on Highway 18.

The impact of the collision pushed Von Arb’s pickup into a 2015 Kia Optima driven by Brenda Collier, 45, of Sutherland, which was eastbound on Highway 18 and had stopped to turn north onto 130th Avenue.

The report stated that all three drivers were taken to Spencer Hospital. Von Arb was cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign.

• Operator jumps from tractor

A 1970 Case 480F operated by Jon Lynn Guthridge, 56, of Sutherland, was hauling a round bale on Wilson Avenue at 12:33 p.m. on Dec. 29. The bale broke and landed on the gravel road. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, as Guthridge maneuvered around the bale to carry it with the 3-point carrier the tractor stalled in reverse gear. It rolled down the hill, entered the west ditch and continued toward a creek. Guthridge jumped off the tractor as it was entering the ditch.

Guthridge suffered suspected serious/incapacitating injuries and was transported by Sutherland Ambulance to Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Damage was estimated at $100.
