Trout to be stocked at Scharnberg Pond

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will release rainbow trout at Scharnberg Pond on Saturday, Feb. 10 at noon.

Winter trout stockings are a great place to take kids to catch their first fish. A family-friendly event is paired with each stocking to help anglers have success and fun while fishing.

The popular program is supported by the sales of the trout fee. Anglers need a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee to fish for or possess trout. The daily limit is five trout per licensed angler with a possession limit of 10.

Children age 15 or younger can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but they must limit their catch to one daily limit. They can buy a trout fee, which will allow them to catch their own limit.

Winter trout stocking events are dependent on favorable weather and safe ice conditions. Check the DNR Trout Fishing website at http://www.iowadnr.gov/trout for possible changes to the schedule.

Master Gardener training offered in Clay County

The application window is open to sign up for the 2024 Spring Master Gardener training cohort which will be offered in Clay and Palo Alto counties, which are teaming up to host the program.

Iowans wishing to become Master Gardener volunteers choose a county through which to complete training, participate in online learning modules and attend at least four in-person training sessions organized by the county office. After passing the final exam, trainees put their knowledge to work with a 40-hour internship in their training county.

Applicants have until Feb. 12 to apply for the spring session. Counties are seeking participants of all backgrounds and experience levels who desire to grow their horticultural knowledge and serve their communities. Training for the spring session begins Feb. 26.

Learn more about the program online at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/mastergardener/become-master-gardener or by contacting your local ISU Extension and Outreach county office.

The Iowa Master Gardener Program is a year-round volunteer service organization that utilizes university-trained volunteers who use research-based horticulture and gardening knowledge and practices to educate people and coordinate projects that promote healthy communities.

Local Extension staff coordinators can help anyone with questions about joining Master Gardener training this year, including details of when and where in-person meetings will take place in their county or Extension region. In-person sessions for Clay and Palo Alto county participants will be announced at the beginning of training.

For more information about the training in Clay and Palo Alto counties, contact Sarah Dirks, Clay County Adult Program Coordinator, at (712) 262-2264 or sdirks@iastate.edu; or Kat Davis, Palo Alto County Master Gardener Coordinator, at (712) 852-2865 or kathyd@iastate.edu.

Online parenting workshops to begin

The Science of Parenting team from Iowa State University has scheduled online workshops to help parents learn strategies to use. The four workshops being offered in February are “Understanding Research and Reality,” “Understanding Temperament,” “Children’s Ages and Parenting Stages,” and “Positive Discipline.”

The workshops all focus on the objective of sharing research-based information that fits each family’s own reality. In the first workshop, you will discover how to connect what research says about parenting to everyday life. The second workshop is all about temperament, or the unique traits everyone has and how to navigate them. The third helps parents and caregivers better understand child development, and the fourth addresses the common question of “How do I practice positive discipline and manage my child’s behavior?”

“Understanding Research and Reality” will be online Thursday, Feb. 8. Registration is online at https://go.iastate.edu/2K4XRF. This workshop is approved for foster parent credit hours.

“Understanding Temperament” will be held online Thursday, Feb. 15. Register online at https://go.iastate.edu/KXFK2A.
