Okoboji/HMS girls, boys sweep duals at Sibley

Both of Okoboji/HMS's wrestling teams had perfect nights during duals hosted by Sibley-Ocheyedan on Jan. 11.

The Pioneer boys defeated Sheldon/South O'Brien, 43-30, and topped Sibley-Ocheyedan, 51-24. H-M-S athletes contributed a total of five individual wins.

James Gellerman (175) was 2-0, pinning Kolt Roos of Sheldon/SOS (0:59) and Dominic Marco of S-O (3:23). Nathan Stofferan (113) also earned two wins, pinning Jackson Van Der Sloot of S-O (3:57) and receiving a forfeit.

Ethan Wiersma (215) won by fall over Kayden Kooima of S-O (1:15) and lost a narrow decision to Landon Sietstra of Sheldon/SOS (3-2).

Bryce Ortega (285) was edged by Jack Leng of Sheldon/SOS (3-2) and lost by fall to Michael Block of S-O (1:38). Nathaniel Ball (138) lost by fall to Cole Cox of Sheldon/SOS (0:57).

Other wrestlers with two wins were Myles Lopez (120), Tyce Hanson (138) and Nathaniel Franklin (165).


H-M-S wrestler David Wetrich lost by fall during an extra match with Levi Lang of Sheldon/SOS (3:51).

The Pioneer girls also swept their duals, defeating Sheldon/South O'Brien/Sibley-Ocheyedan, 36-33, and Spirit Lake Park, 45-30. Six wrestlers finished the night with a pair of wins: Dulce Ortega (110 pounds), Brilee Fauth (125), Kimberly Bergeson (130), Laylah Kalsow (145), Jennesa Gates (170) and Amelia Sirola (235).

Both Okoboji/HMS squads will wrestle Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and MOC-Floyd Valley on Jan. 18 at Rock Valley. The girls will compete in the Siouxland Conference tournament on Jan. 19 at Inwood and the regional tournament at Sioux City on Jan. 20. The boys compete at the two-day Herb Irgens Invitational on Jan. 19-20 at Ida Grove.
