1998: Planning starts for new Hartley library

• Dec. 23, 1948

A very large crowd attended the parent-teacher meeting at the Moneta school assembly. After a short business meeting, all enjoyed the operetta “The Magic Christmas Bell,” presented by the elementary grades. It was followed by group singing of Christmas songs.

Mrs. Anna Lee Wold, mother of Mrs. George Anderson of Hartley, arrived in San Francisco, Calif. aboard a Navy transport. She had been evacuated from the province of Homan in China. She had been a missionary for over 34 years and had just completed about 3-1/2 years work in the field.

Receiving four times as many votes as the next highest party, the “Shmoos” captured all of the political posts and freshman elections at Creighton University. Vernon McCarty, of Hartley, received 109 votes to win the office of president of the freshman class.

• Dec. 20, 1973

The German Department of the Hartley High School shared the melodic lyrics of favorite German carols with the Happy Hearts, the St. Paul’s Ladies Aid, in private homes and at three custodial homes. Included in the program were “O Tannenbaum,” “Stille Nacht,” “O du Frohliche” and “Rudolf mit rotem Naschen.”

The city council discussed water rates which had to be increased so bonding companies would bid on revenue bonds for Hartley’s new water tower. The proposed rates were about double the existing rates which had not been changed since February of 1958.

Henry Strubbe, of Melvin, attended a three-day workshop for nearly 200 state and federal agricultural inspectors. Strubbe had been an inspector for the Iowa Department of Agriculture’s Food Products Control for 12 years.

• Dec. 24, 1998

Gale Bobolz, president of Security State Bank in Hartley and Milford, was retiring from his position at the end of the year. He planned to be associated with the bank on a limited basis for a period of time. Bobolz joined Security State Bank in 1965 and had been Chief Executive Officer for 26 years.

James R. Kennedy, a library consultant from Storm Lake, visited with members of the Hartley Public Library Board of Trustees about plans for a new library. He recommended that Hartley have a library facility with a minimum size of 8,000 square feet, based on the size of the community and the library’s increasing circulation.
