The Hartley Hawks had little trouble with a game but overpowered Paullina team in the annual Homecoming game. Highlights of the evening included the Homecoming parade and the crowning of Queen Wilma Robinson, the freshman class candidate.

A.M. King and Son purchased the Hartley Motor Co., the Kaiser-Frazer automobile agency, from Henry and Dale Lorenzen. The latter would continue to operate the Lorenzen Motor Co., the authorized Pontiac agency in Hartley.

While Iowans were electing Republican William Beardsley as governor by a large margin, they also decisively supported Democrat Guy M. Gillette for the U.S. Senate seat and helped President Harry S. Truman defeat Republican candidate Thomas E. Dewey.

Newly installed officers of the Hartley Kiwanis Club were Jim Schroeder, president; Bruce Branson, vice president; Walt Ronnfeldt, vice president-elect, and Phil Dice, secretary-treasurer. The outgoing president of the club was George Wingerson.

In his fourth year as starting defensive tackle for the No. 1-ranked Northwestern College football team, Tom Rieck, of Hartley, was leading the Red Raiders in assisted tackles. The “block of granite” was considered a candidate to become an NAIA All-American.

Four Hartley students had a successful day at the district All-State auditions. Deb Donnenwerth and Rita Bobolz were selected to play in the All-State Band; Tammy Nielsen was chosen to participate in the 600-voice All-State Chorus; and John Krebs won the district elimination for All-State pianist.

Three instrumentalists from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn were selected to play in the 1998 All-State Band. Those successfully auditioning for the spots were Rachel Funke, sophomore, bassoon; Rebecca Gerritson, junior, clarinet; and Stacy Vander Velde, freshman, tuba.

Approximately 50 students were participating in the H-M-S Drama Department’s production of “Krazy Kamp.” The play was a story about the goings-on between two rival summer camps. Tryouts were held in September and the cast put in long hours of rehearsals.

Tom Vilsack was the first Democrat to be elected governor of Iowa in 32 years. He defeated Republican candidate Jim Ross Lightfoot. Vilsack would face Republican majorities in both houses of the Iowa General Assembly when it convened in January.
