HFD hosting pancake breakfast

The Hartley Fire Department will host its annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Hartley Community Center from 7 a.m.-1 p.m.

During the event, the Hartley Summer Celebration Committee will hold a silent auction for a chainsaw carving that was made in August. See the ads on Page 5 for more details.

Red’s Catering menu for Nov. 8

Red’s Catering in downtown Hartley will be serving several specials on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Red’s will also be serving a Thanksgiving meal again this year. See the ads on Page 3 for more details.

Election Night soup supper at St. Joe’s

Don’t worry about cooking on Tuesday, Nov. 7 – St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hartley has you covered.

The church will once again hold its Election Day soup and pie supper from 4-7 p.m. See the ad on Page 4 for more details.


St. Paul’s Lutheran to host vets for supper

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley will once again host a thank you meal for local veterans and their families on Friday. Nov. 10.

The meal will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. Those interested in attending must RSVP to the church office by Thursday, Nov. 2 by calling (712) 728-2711.

Hartley Country Crafters showcase

Hartley Country Crafters will hold its 39th annual craft show this Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The event will be held at the Hartley Community Center and features handmade crafts and gifts for all occasions by local artists. See the ad on Page 8 for more details.


Gem & Junque Sale is Saturday

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley will hold its annual Gem & Junque Sale on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. A bake sale will also be featured.

Auxiliary hosting breakfast for vets

The Hartley American Legion Auxiliary will hold its annual thank you breakfast for local veterans on Friday, Nov. 10 from 7:30-9 a.m. Spouses and guests are welcome to attend.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in May City will host its annual Fall Festival on Saturday. Nov. 11 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. See the ad on Page 4 for more details.

Thursday, Nov. 9: Breakfast – Pancake/sausage bites, fruit, juice; Lunch – Spaghetti, breadstick, romaine salad, green beans, applesauce cup.

Friday, Nov. 10: Breakfast – Donut, fruit, juice; Lunch – Mandarin orange chicken with rice, broccoli/cauliflower, pineapple, bread (9-12).

Milk is served with each meal. Fruit/veggie bar offered daily.

New starting time for community Bible study

A community Bible study is held each Sunday at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Hartley Public Library. Please use the east door to enter.

Regular hours at Royal library

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m .; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Al Anon meetings

Al Anon meetings are held at the following locations each week:

Wednesday, 8 p.m., 511 Southmoor, Spencer; Thursday, 8 p.m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal; Sunday, 7 p.m., Sanford Medical Center, 118 N 7th Ave., Sheldon.

Veterans’ dinner Nov. 12 in Royal

The Royal American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a dinner at noon on Sunday, Nov. 12, for all veterans and their families at the Royal Community Center. Everything is going to be provided, so come and enjoy a time of food and fellowship.

Upcoming blood drive at Spencer

New and regular donors can roll up their sleeves to give blood during a drive being conducted by LifeServe Blood Center. The drive is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at 901 11th St. SW in Spencer.

Grassley staff to hold office hours

The staff of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) will hold traveling office hours in 21 Iowa counties from Nov. 6-17. Iowans seeking assistance regarding a personal issue with a federal agency or wishing to share views on matters of federal policy may stop by during the scheduled hours.

The senator will not be in attendance. Grassley’s state offices regularly help constituents contact federal agencies to address problems with Social Security payments, military service matters, immigration cases, veterans’ benefits, IRS challenges and other issues. Iowans can also seek assistance via Grassley’s website.

Regional Director Jacob Bossman, of Sioux City, will be in two area counties on Monday, Nov. 6. His schedule is as follows:

• O’Brien County: 9:30-10:30 a.m., Sheldon City Hall, 3rd Floor SCDC Conference Room, 416 9th Street, Sheldon.

• Osceola County: 11 a.m.-noon, Osceola County Courthouse Basement, Old Driver’s License Room, 300 7th Street, Sibley.
