1973: Ground broken on new wing at CMH

• Oct. 8, 1948

Mrs. Marie Ramsey arrived home by train from Chicago after a 30-day visit in Germany. Most of the time was spent in Flensberg where she visited her aged mother, her stepfather, brothers and sisters and their families. It had been 34 years since she had left Germany and she felt there was very little change in that area.

Cocoa, a German shorthaired pointer owned and handled by Jimmy Hesse, of Hartley, placed first in the novice class and first in the derby class of retrievers during the Isaak Walton field day at Emmetsburg. Some 1,200 people attended the event.

Approximately 400 persons enjoyed a delicious baby beef dinner sponsored by the American Legion. The dinner was prepared and served by the Auxiliary, with Mrs. Emilia Fick in charge.

• Oct. 11, 1973

Dr. Lee Marven was joining the staff at the Hartley Medical Center. He had worked with Dr. Ivan E. Brown earlier in the year and many area residents had the opportunity to meet him. He was residing in Virginia but planned to be in Hartley before the first of the year.

Three bids were opened for a 400,000 gallon water tank. Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. submitted the low bid of $209,000. The completion date for Hartley’s new spheroid water tower was changed to June 30, 1975, due to the critical shortage of steel.

Ground was broken for the addition to Mann Nursing Wing at the Community Memorial Hospital. Board President Duane Kolpin, Building Committee Chairman Amos Hartmann and Board Members Harlan Goetsch, Arlo Snider and Virgil Treimer took part in the ceremony.

• Oct. 15, 1998

The Hartley Public Library planned a series of preschool story hours before several upcoming holidays. Children ages 3-5 were invited to the sessions which included stories, finger plays, songs and games, and an occasional craft.

Ninety-nine students from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School participated in the state marching band contest at Cherokee. The marching band and flag corps’ score of 65.4 fell short of the minimum of 68 points necessary to receive a Division I rating.

Shaun Groen, son of Kevin and Marcia Groen of Hartley, was a member of the royal court for Viking Days ’98 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. Groen was an elementary education major and planned to teach middle school mathematics.
