Parkinson’s Disease conference is Oct. 26

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host the 2nd Annual Northwest Iowa Parkinson’s Disease Conference on Thursday, Oct. 26 from noon-5 p.m. at the Lakeshore Center at Okoboji in Milford.

The program is designed to be an afternoon of learning and networking for individuals with Parkinson’s, their care partners, loved ones and anyone with an interest in learning more about the disease. The conference is being sponsored at no cost to attendees; however, preregistration is required to plan adequately for seating and materials.

“Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a type of movement disorder that can affect the ability to perform common, daily activities. It is a chronic and progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms become worse over time,” said Dickinson County Extension Adult Program Coordinator Sue Boettcher in a news release. “Most people who develop the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease do so sometime after the age of 50, but Parkinson’s disease can affect younger persons as well.”

The program this year will feature Dr. Ray Dorsey, a professor of neurology and director of the Center for Human Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He is also author of the book, “Ending Parkinson’s Disease.”

“We are very excited to have Dr. Dorsey join us,” Boettcher said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge, and there will be time for questions.”

In addition to the keynote, the afternoon will also include learning from Beth Samuelson, dietitian with Lakes Regional Healthcare; a taste of music therapy; a panel Q&A time; and a variety of vendors and community resources.

Breaks will be taken throughout the afternoon and light refreshments will be served.

Register online at https://go.iastate.edu/AEVHC2 or call the Dickinson County Extension office at (712) 336-3488 to register or for more information.
